Fall is when Tulsa's dog calendar fills up. Here's what to plan around, with the recurring events you can count on every year.
Howl-O-Ween at Whiteside Park
Tulsa Parks' annual Halloween event for dogs: a costume contest, a dog-treat scavenger hunt and a lot of very good boys in very bad outfits. Whiteside Park is at 4009 S. Pittsburg Ave. Check Tulsa Parks' program listings (tulsaparks.recdesk.com) for this year's date and registration. If you're going, our costume survival guide covers how to pick an outfit your dog will actually tolerate.
Second Saturday Dog Day at Tulsa Botanic Garden
On the second Saturday of the month, dogs can walk the garden with you: non-retractable 6-foot leash, current vaccinations, two dogs per household. Regular admission for people, free for dogs, and there's a pup cup at the visitor center while supplies last. The garden in October is the prettiest walk in the metro.
Gathering Place Dog Play Days
Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, dogs are welcome on the main pathways, leashed. Cooler weekends make this the season to go.
Adoption events
Tulsa Animal Services regularly waives fees and brings adoptable dogs to community events in the fall, and the new shelter near 36th Street North is slated to open this season. Follow the shelter's social channels or check 24petconnect.com/TulsaAdoptablePets. Every adoption includes spay/neuter, vaccines and a microchip.
Dog shows and sports
The Tulsa Dog Training Club runs agility trials and obedience classes year-round, and the Mid-Continent Kennel Club hosts all-breed shows at Expo Square. Even if you never compete, the beginner obedience classes are one of the best-value training options in town.
Know of one we missed?
Patio nights, 5Ks with a dog division, rescue fundraisers: send the details to admin@dogbugle.com and we'll list it in the Sunday email.
